Christopher and his Autism
6M presents, Saturday, February 21, 2009, 9:26 PM.
Today, my family was at IKEA for dinner. Of course, most of you know full well that my elder brother has autism, that is: a brain development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. These signs all begin before a child is three years old. The autism spectrum disorders (ASD) also include related conditions with milder signs and symptoms.Anyway, my brother was...well, behaving like an autistic child, yelling and whatever. I was embarrassed enough. Then, I noticed this little girl of about 4 at the next table who was staring pointedly and unashamedly at my brother, occasionally jabbing her parents in the ribs and speaking in stage whispers about his 'weird' behaviour. ('Weird' is coincidentally a word TWL and I got in today's MOE spelling competition quarter finals. Wish us luck.) That got me really mad. Why is it that the public is so ignorant of such a common affliction? (Apparently even Jiaqi's brother has it.) And do our 'considerate' fellow citizens not know better than to rudely look at somebody, drawing attention to him where it is not needed?!So, I am making this post today to tell you more about life outside 6M, in the hope that more will know about this disorder and above all, not shame Singapore in a public area which is a hotspot for foreigners to dine. I hope no-one in this class will make such a shameful mistake.Labels: Nuggets of Information: Life Outside the Mpire
